IELTS Overview



The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine –band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).




Thousands of education and training providers, the world over, rely on IELTS to select their students. Institutions in North-America, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and other Common Wealth countries prefer IELTS as a test of English language proficiency.


IELTS is accepted for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.


Many professional registration bodies and employers rely on IELTS as evidence of English language proficiency.

Academic Or General Training

IELTS is available in two test formats :


Academic – for people applying for higher education or professional registration.

General Training – for those who are migrating to Australia, Canada and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training, programs and work experience in an English speaking environment.

Both formats provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills :Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

IELTS Test Structure


Listening Lasts 30 minutes.

Test-takers will listen to 4 recorded monologues and answer questions.

Reading 60 minutes long.

·         Three long reading passages with tasks.

·         Texts may be descriptive or factual, ranging from discursive to analytical.

·         May include visuals such as; diagrams, graphs, and illustrations.

·         Text are from authentic sources (e.g. taken from books, newspapers)

60 minutes long.

·         Three reading passages with tasks.

·         Section 1 contains two or three short factual texts.

·         Section 2 contains two short, work-related, factual texts.

·         Section 3 contains one longer text on a topic of general interest.

·         All texts are authentic sourced from company handbooks, official documents, books, and newspapers.

Writing 60 minutes long.

·         Task 1 is 150 words where the test-taker must summarize, describe or explain a table, graph, chart or diagram.

·         Task 2 is a short essay task of at least 250 words

Speaking Will last 11 to 14 minutes.

How can I register for the IELTS Test?

You can register by contacting your nearest PIE office.

How much the IELTS Test cost?

The present cost for registration for the Academic or General Training IELTS Test is Tk, 16,500.

UKVI IELTS test registration cost is Tk. 20,600.

What kind of identification document I need for the IELTS Test?

You need a valid national passport to register and give the test.

Can I postpone or cancel the test?

Yes, you can by getting in touch with the test centre where you booked your IELTS. However, there are certain terms:

  • On postponing or cancelling more than 5 weeks before, you get the refund minus the administration charge.
  • On postponing or cancelling within 5 weeks, you do not get any refund. However, if there is a medical reason, you can present the medical certificate within 5 days to get refund minus the administration charge.
  • If you can’t make it up to the test center due to any uncontrollable factor, you get to give the test on the next available date.

How long it takes to receive the IELTS results?

It is usually out in 13 days after the exam
